Aulus personally despised shopping, but, although he was ashamed to admit it, Aurelia had him wrapped around her finger, and he would do anything she asked. Aurelia had gone down to the Great Forum to get some baby toys and had dragged her husband with her. Sitting down on a couch, he tried calming himself by thinking of the day before. Aulus was experiencing the nervousness typical to all future fathers, which was only increased by the moans of pain coming from his wife's room. That had been one year ago, and now, their first child was due to be born. Things proceeded as normal, and they were wed in 216 B.C. There Julius's beautiful, raven-haired daughter Aurelia had caught his eye, and he her's. Since he had distinguished himself in the final battle, he was brought before Herrenius Julius to be commended for his actions. A former garrison commander in Arretium, he had fought in the slave rebellion of 218 B.C. It was a night to fear.Īulus Varus paced the corridors of the pro-consul's palace, his anxiety clearly evident. Even the taverns in the poorer parts emmitted almost no noise. The depth of the silence was suffocating, as well as contagious. The streets of the city were silent as death. Arretium, high seat of the Julii, seemed especially tense. It was as if it was waiting for something, something important.

Storm clouds had gathered, completely obscuring the moon and stars, and yet not one raindrop had fallen. It's gonna be long, but I hope that doesn't discourage you from reading it. Seeing as my first story sucked (and I just got bored with it), I have decided to write a new one.
